Lexington #7 Students, Staff, and Families:
On Friday, February 4th a judge in Sangamon County issued a temporary restraining order that has a significant impact on schools, communities, and our children in Illinois. The ruling which can be found here, clearly states that schools cannot enforce the Executive orders that mandate masks, quarantine "close contacts", or require vaccinations or testing of staff.
Effective immediately, Lexington #7 will change to a mask optional policy for students and staff, cease exclusions of asymptomatic “close contacts,” and cease mandatory vaccination or testing for staff. We will implement the Health and Safety Plan that the Lexington #7 Board of Education voted to approve this past July prior to these Executive Orders being mandated. This document can be found on our website.
There are a few exceptions to note:
1) Federal Law requires masks on buses and that will not change.
2) Any student who attends instructional services off campus must continue to follow the safety expectations of that campus.
3) Any athlete or coach who competes at on off-site venue must continue to follow the expectations for that venue.
Please read this part carefully: This court decision will be appealed. This is a TEMPORARY restraining order, which means that this court’s decision could be overturned as soon as tomorrow by a higher court. If an appeal requires our district to put these COVID-19 mitigations back in place, then we will proceed as advised by our legal counsel.
It is not lost on the Lexington #7 Board of Education that the potential of flip-flopping back and forth on requiring and not requiring masks and other mitigations is likely and not ideal for anyone. However, the Lexington #7 Board of Education would be remiss to not take the opportunity to govern by local control when given the ability to do so. If this pandemic has taught us anything, we have learned the ability to be much more fluid and adaptable at a minute’s notice.
As a district, we realize that there are extremely differing opinions on this topic in our community and our nation. We encourage each family to determine what immediate steps they feel are most appropriate for their children and family circumstances. We have stated this before and we will state it again: All staff, students, and parents, whether or not they wear a mask, will equally be a part of our Minutemen Nation and will be treated with dignity and respect. This works both ways, and we will not allow this to become a divisive matter in our schools. Stay strong Minutemen!
Paul T. Deters, Superintendent

Dear Lexington #7 Students, Staff, and Families,
Last evening, an Illinois judge ruled on a lawsuit filed by more than 700 parents across the state that challenged state-mandated COVID-19 mitigations. The decision that was passed down has many layers and questions that are yet unanswered. Specifically, we are working to understand if and how the judgment affects Lexington #7.
So that there is no confusion, we will continue to operate as we have been until we have more definitive information. Thank you for your continued support and patience.
